Why Your Coaching Feels Like A Junk Drawer (The More Is Better Fallacy)
I used to think a bigger program meant more value. What it actually did was water down results, and it started costing me clients.
So if you have ever looked at your own program and thought, how do I teach all of this, or I don’t even know what to do with this anymore, I just keep adding, your coaching framework has turned into a junk drawer. Not because you are disorganized. Because you organized it by topic instead of by result.
Why topic teaching keeps your coaching framework stuck
Most coaches come to me teaching a topic. Mindset. Blood sugar regulation. Confidence.
Topics expand forever. Confidence is a life mastery project. So is mindset. Teaching a topic assumes there is a finish line somewhere, and there isn’t one.
A business exists because it solves a problem. When you educate about a topic with no problem attached to it, people will clap for you and tell you that you’re amazing, and they still won’t see you as the solution to anything.
So the fix is to build your coaching framework around a result instead of a topic. Remember, you are in the business of solving problems.
The problem was never that you know too much. I want you to know all the things. The problem is that none of it is organized toward a result, so it feels like it could go on forever.
Your client’s excitement peaks the day they buy
One of my favorite books is Retention Point by Robert Skrob, and he shows a curve I think about constantly. Your client’s excitement about your work peaks at the moment they hit purchase.
Then many of us start delivering. Go do this. Read that. Watch these modules. Your client is drinking from a fire hose, and the opposite of results happens. They stall out, they pull away, they ghost.
Those clients are not lazy and they don’t care less than you do. We just never gave them the clarity to solve one problem.
What a cluttered program is actually costing you
Referrals dry up first. When people cannot describe what you do and what they got out of it, they are far less likely to send someone your way.
On sales calls you overtalk, because you are trying to justify a coaching framework you cannot show quickly. The prospect assumes you don’t have one, then starts wondering whether you have really walked clients through this before.
Completion rates drop. And you get tired, because you are creating constantly and teaching everything you know every single time.
Three ways to move from topic coaching to results coaching
- Name the result first, before you touch the curriculum.
- Run every module and exercise through the cut test. If I remove this, would they still get the result? If yes, thin it out.
- Start from the end and reverse design forward.
Reverse design is my methodology, and it is what I teach inside Framework Builder Lab. Start at the end and work backward, so you can see which pieces of your coaching framework are load bearing and which ones are just sitting in the drawer.
What changes when your coaching framework is clear
You stop ping ponging. Your coaching framework gets stronger every time you walk a client through it. One of my students said it gives her the finish line, so she has total freedom in her sessions because she already knows where she is going.
Your coaching becomes teachable and scalable. One to one can become a group, and a group can move toward asynchronous learning. Clients actually finish. And you can sell it without a random twenty minute explanation, because you know exactly what result you deliver.
A cluttered program does not mean you know too much. It means you organized by topic instead of by result. Once you know the result, cutting gets easy.
Nobody opens a junk drawer and finds what they need fast. The alternative is a simple drawer, where a few things live in the spot you would expect them to be.
