Legal Musts For Online Coaches With Christy Westerfeld

Legal must haves for coaches

In this week’s episode, I am joined by lawyer Christy Westerfield, and we discuss legal must-haves for coaches and the role of well-written contracts in their business.

She highlights how legal protection adds credibility, prevents client conflicts, and emphasizes the importance of privacy policies and data privacy compliance.

Christy Westerfeld, Esq. is an attorney and legal resource for online entrepreneurs and coaches. As the CEO and founder of Coach Legally LLC, Christy offers customized legal templates for online business owners and coaches and masterclasses and legal education for starting a business online legally. Christy also is the principal attorney at Westerfeld Law, P.C., where she serves clients nationwide with trademark and copyright protection and serves clients locally in California, serving as outside general counsel.

Personally, she has been a gift in my business to support all my legal questions, which is exactly why I invited her to the show!

Added Credibility

Legal protection can feel overwhelming, but it also adds credibility and professionalism to a coaching business.  It gives the client the assurance that you have been here before and care about them and

Clients feel more comfortable and secure when a coach provides a well-written contract that outlines their responsibilities and obligations.

Delegating the task of creating and implementing contracts to save time and ensure compliance is where a lawyer can come into your business and support you.  They can be clear in all the legal must-haves so you aren’t wasting time or energy down the road.

Ending A Client Relationship

We chat about what happens when a great or not-so-great client relationship ends and how to protect yourself. Termination provisions in contracts allow for the cancellation of agreements in various situations, such as financial constraints or life events.

Legal Jargon

There can be so many overwhelming terms when it comes to legal protection. Should I have an L.L.C. or Sole Prorperierhsip? Do I need insurance?  Do I need specific legal documents for my website or group programs?

We hit on all these questions inside this super resourceful episode and all the other legal must-haves for coaches.

The Reality

Implementing contracts upfront can save business owners from costly legal battles down the line.  While it may feel like a big expense in the startup phase, it may be the best investment you’ve ever made. As Christy says, “Your future self will thank you ten times over for doing the contract upfront.”

Heya, I’m Amanda!

Coaching changed my life.

Coaching is in my blood. I became a coach for the 1st time at 15 when I coached 4-5 year old boys in a pee-wee basketball league. I then coached the hardest crowd ever as a high school teacher and coach, then added to my coaching resume Level 1 CrossFit Coach, Precision Nutrition Coach, and now Certified Master Life Coach, NLP and hypnotherapy practitioner. I have combined my 25 years of coaching into this program to help you become a better coach.
